The Hansard Society discussion paper, Paying for Politics - the Principles of Funding Political Parties calls for any scheme of funding for political parties to be designed around a set of core principles. These are:

  • Transparency
  • Low ceilings on general election expenditure
  • Consent for corporate or trades unions donations
  • Working for the broadest possible base of donations
  • Encouraging wide participation in the political process
  • Setting strict conditions on the provision of public funds to political parties.
