Andrea Leadsom is MP for South Northamptonshire, Co-Chair of the All-Party Group on European Reform and joint founder of the Fresh Start Project. In 2012 she won Newcomer of the Year at the Spectator Parliamentarian of the Year Awards. For politicians and campaign teams this is a very real problem. This all day event, organised in association with the University of Manchester, looked at how politicians from around the world have used digital technology to enhance their campaigns and how this has impacted on elections, for better or for worse.

Young People's Question Time 2012 was, like last year, a huge success. Over 200 young people from schools and colleges across London and beyond descended on Portcullis House to quiz a panel of MPs, and one Peer, on the issues and policies affecting them. And as the generation who grew up in the aftermath of the UK's deepest recession, it was no surprise that issues surrounding jobs and the economy dominated the evening, alongside, or course, education.

Is it true that "user generated sites ... eventually begin to sag under the weight of their own banality", and is this the inevitable fate of any attempt to crowd-source policy discussion? At the Hansard Society event "more heat than light? Can social media inform policy making?" the debate was not over whether politicians can track on-line discussion over Twitter and Facebook, or even whether they should, but whether there is any value in them doing it at all.

The media claim to play a critical role in our democracy, shining a bright light on those in power on behalf of the public. But in the context of that place in our democracy, what role and responsibilities, if any, do they have in relation to political engagement?

Recent findings from the Hansard Society's Audit of Political Engagement suggest that over the last decade more young people (18-24 year-olds) feel knowledgeable about politics and more say they are certain to vote. The Audit also suggests that as young people age, they do become more politically engaged. What does this tell us about young people's attitudes to politics?
