Congratulations to Rt. Hon Peter Riddell CBE!

Congratulations to Rt. Hon Peter Riddell, former chair of the Hansard Society, who received a CBE in the Queen’s 2012 birthday honours list for services to journalism and for public service.

Peter served as Hansard Society chair from 2007 to 2012 and was a member of the Hansard Society council from 1996 to 2012. Peter worked for the Times and the Financial Times and is now Director of the Institute for Government

Peter is succeeded as chair of the Hansard Society by Lord Grocott.

Peter commented:
I am delighted that my award of the CBE is partly in recognition of my chairing the Hansard Society for the past five years. In reality, that is a tribute to the hard work of the dedicated staff of the Society who are committed to its mission of promoting understanding of Parliament. This is reflected in the sustained excellence of the publications and activities, and the packed meetings at Westminster and elsewhere. The need for the Hansard Society is as strong as ever in its life and I am sure the Society will flourish under my successor as chair, Bruce Grocott.

The Hansard Society offers two types of Membership:

Premium Membership - £65.00

Includes basic membership package (worth £20, see below) and subscription to Parliamentary Affairs, at a reduced rate (usually £62)

Parliamentary Affairs is a quarterly academic journal published by the Oxford University Press in association with the Hansard Society. The subscription runs from January to December and is billed by the Hansard Society.

Create educational resources to encourage and empower young people learn about the political system in the UK, such as Y Vote? Mock Elections and HeadsUp.org.uk
Produce new research into how to strengthen parliamentary democracy, such as The Annual Audit of Political Engagement, Parliament 20:20 and the Women at the Top series.
Explore the social and political impacts of digital media and how to use them to encourage greater public participation in politics
Run a programme of free events in the Scottish and Westminster Parliament's, which which provide a neutral platform to allow people to debate political issues with parliamentarians and decision makers.
